Introduction

I had a small business in loss control and safety and health., Productive Potential, Inc.  Although I never got any clients, or not yet anyway, I want to express in three posts my philosophy to safety and health and the employee and how it relates to the small business.

At the same time this blog is supposed to be a learning tool for myself.  Although not formally trained in safety and health I do feel a lot of safety and health is common sense.  Yes, their is the technical side of safety and health issues but also their is a common sense side which, I think, takes much more effort.

I want to learn what others have to say and start a conversation that not only myself but all can learn ideas.  If I say something wrong please let me know and I will correct it.

First, this will be a three part post:

  1. Part I:  Employees.
  2. Part II:  Small Business Owners.
  3. Part III:  How to reconcile the issues discussed and how to move forward.

So with a little trepidation and a lot of hope in getting a client here goes:

Part I: Employees

Simple fact is that many employees, some anyway, have an, “It will not happen to me!” attitude.  They say I have been doing this or that the same way for years and they tell the safety manager, “Why should I change now?”  Again the fact is that it only takes once.  We all know this, the employee and the safety professional.

As safety professionals we need to let the employee know that they should put their safety glasses, hard hat, aprons, gloves, etc. on not because the company says so, although good to do to help the company as we shall see.  But, and more important, the employee should put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their families.  Sometimes it is hard to bring it down to that very personal level but we need to try.  Safety is for the employee’s family!  If the employee goes home with no eyes they cannot see their children grow-up.  If the employee goes home with no arms or legs he or she cannot play with the kids or they will have a hard time getting around with their significant other.  Or, heaven forbid, what happens if you do not put on you safety equipment and you do not go home at all.

Conclusion of this post

I said earlier that I have a small business.  I have another question and request.  If you feel after you look at my website and my service offerings and if you know of another type of service or if you know of another angle I should take please let me know.  I am looking for new ideas and new movements in safety and health.

Productive Potential, Inc.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Have a fantastic day!
